In today’s healthcare institutions, clinicians have an increased demand for safety in medical devices to protect themselves but primarily their patients. The most common risks that healthcare professionals encounter are needle-stick injuries and contamination via contact with patients’ blood or other infected bodily fluids. Statistics indicate that 600,000 to 1,000,000 needle accidents occur every year in the US. Needle injuries may lead to severe and even fatal infections, caused by blood-borne proteins.

Health and safety institutions in Europe and in the US took significant steps in establishing legal arrangements to minimize risks associated with being a healthcare professional.
